JANE AUSTEN & COUNTRY DANCES

Historical Social Dances of the 17th-19th Century
for Beginners and Advanced Dancers

In the glamorous era of the 17th to 19th centuries, when the world was filled with court balls, street festivals, and elegant social dances, historical dances came to life. Supposedly, Queen Elizabeth I first brought these cheerful dances to the English court. However, it was not until after the era of Oliver Cromwell in 1651 that publications began, continuing into the early years of the 19th century. Around 1680, thanks to the dancing master Isaac, these dances even reached the French court and quickly spread throughout Europe.

I cordially invite you to join us every Monday in the fascinating world of historical dances, which were danced in the Renaissance, the Baroque period, and during the time of Jane Austen. Whether you are a beginner or have already made progress – this class offers you the opportunity to experience and appreciate the variety and grace of dances from the Middle Ages to the Empire era up close.

In my beginners' class for historical dances, we primarily teach entertaining country dances that are easy to learn. This way, you can quickly enjoy the pleasure of dancing together with others. Furthermore, the class offers the opportunity to learn the appropriate steps and stylistic elements of the different eras, to perfect elegant bows and manners, and to explore other dance forms as well.

During the course, participants will also be introduced to the somewhat more demanding heys, chains, and figures of the Country Dances. However, the joy of music, dance, and community is always the main focus.

With the skills you acquire in this class, you will soon be able to participate in other classes, courses, festivals, and balls with joy, composure, and appropriate skill. And the best part: you do not need a fixed dance partner to embark on this dance adventure. Look forward to immersing yourself in the charming world of historical dances and mastering the delightful steps of past eras. We look forward to welcoming you to our dance community!
